Why Every Indian Woman, and Man, Should Watch This Short Film

The statistics invoked in a new short film titled 'Dying To Be Me' are a brutal reminder that it is the economic shackles of being a woman in India that prove the most binding. According to this video, Indian women make up half the country's population, contribute to 70% of its working house and yet just earn 10% of India's salary and a miserable 1% of its wealth.

'Dying To Be Me,' made by Indian-American filmmaker Deva Katta, was released to mark Independence Day and the message it drives home is the importance of economic independence.

The female protagonist in the two-minute film, played by actress-singer Smita, is educated, urban and qualified. Yet, she is as disenfranchised as the poorest, most rustic woman. Financial freedom is hers only when she takes control of her own life, wresting from a husband who seeks to cage her.

"Live free and let live free," is the film's conclusion.

There is a pronounced caste subtext to the Maharashtra Bhushan award controversy

Many national as well as international social scientists have paid rich tributes to saint-poets and social reformers in Maharashtra for their rich contributions in imbibing scientific temperament within the traditional conservative society.

The decision by the Bharatiya Janata Party-Shiv Sena coalition government in Maharashtra to award Maharashtra Bhushan to octogenarian Babasaheb Purandare has created a political storm underlining the caste tensions brewing in the state for quite some time. Purandare, who has devoted his lifetime to popularise medieval Maratha king Shivaji for the last six decades, is not a historian per se but wrote books, ballads, organised shows in the nook and corner of the state. Those opposing award to Purandare claims that he had eulogised Shivaji through the Brahminical periscope. Nationalist Congress Party president Sharad Pawar has also expressed reservations against the government’s decision while militant organisations of the Maratha community, like Sambhaji Brigade have vehemently opposed to the award saying they would not tolerate honouring a person who defamed Shivaji.

Despite Maharashtra’s march as a modern state with a highly industrialised society, King Shivaji remained the central statement of faith at the socio-political level. He provided inspiration and remained an icon for new, emerging regional political parties like the Shiv Sena. No Shiv Sena rally could start without garlanding the statue of King Shivaji. Even the Congress Party which ruled the state single-handedly for four decades with the Maratha community at the levers of power always paid its respect to the warrior king. Even during a fight at the time of carving out the Maharashtra state with Mumbai as its capital by bifurcating the bilingual state of Bombay, King Shivaji’s name was invoked to fight authorities in Delhi who were not very interested in making Mumbai the state capital of Maharashtra. Jawaharlal Nehru was initially reluctant to end a bilingual state.

The present controversy over Purandare and his depiction of Shivaji shares the backdrop of an earlier controversy over a book by the American author James Laine, Shivaji: Hindu King in Islamic India, in which he cast aspersions over Shivaji’s lineage. The highly emotive issue helped the Congress-Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) alliance in 2004 to galvanise OBC votes against the Shiv Sena-BJP and retain power. The Sambhaji Brigade had vandalised Bhandarkar Oriental Research Institute in Pune since Laine had thanked a few scholars for providing assistance in completing his book project on Shivaji. With a subtext of anti-Brahmanism, a subtle campaign was carried out during 2004 and subsequent elections had gone in favour of the Congress-NCP alliance. During the last decade , the OBC vote banks which had been with the Congress had begun to turn towards the Shiv Sena and partially towards the BJP as ambitious leaders from these aspiring castes wanted direct control over levers of power. Some of the OBC communities with considerable clout in state politics rallied round new parties like Rashtriya Samaj Party led by Mahadev Jankar.

The arrival of Narendra Modi on the national scene changed the scenario in Maharashtra where a caste-based power structure was delicately maintained by the Congress-NCP. The Maratha community could rule the state through the Congress apparatus only because it could successfully keep OBCs and minorities on its side. During elections held in 2014 for the Lok Sabha and the state legislative assembly, these OBCs openly revolted against domination of Marathas, resulting in the total rout of the Congress and the NCP.

The BJP has won more than 100 seats in the state legislative assembly and chose young legislator Devendra Fadnavis as the Chief Minister. This has not gone down well even within his own party since he has bypassed many seniors in the party. The present controversy over an award to Purandare also has a sub-text of anti-Brahmanism. Those opposing Purandare are also opposing Fadnavis, indirectly accusing his government of blasphemy.

Though Brahmin community in Maharashtra, mostly confined to academic pursuits and busy climbing corporate ladders, has been politically marginalised over the last six decades, it never even tried to make any effort to reassert itself. Unlike in the North, where the caste intervenes politically, in Maharashtra, the community is satisfied with availing benefits of the market economy. Those who want to continue their political domination find it easy to use emotional issues like writings of James Laine or award to Purandare to target Brahmins to rally round OBCs under their command. No one would entirely agree with whatever Purandare has written but opposing him for the sake of political benefits largely reflects paucity of ideas and pettiness of politicians who go to any extent to ensure vote bank support, unmindful of dangers of dividing society on caste and communal lines. These emotive issues also help to divert attention of younger generation from real issues of drought, unemployment, rising prices of essential commodities, crime and corruption and provide agenda of hatred and violence.

Peace and communal harmony are always very fragile and have to be protected. Maharashtra Navnirman Sena chief Raj Thackeray has jumped into the controversy warning fanatic elements opposing Purandare of dire consequences if they cross the line. With his stand, Raj wants to target the apolitical young generation who are more interested in development and secure jobs rather than get involved in murky caste and communal politics.

Political exigency is blatantly witnessed as those who used to eulogise Purandare in the last couple of decades for his love of Shivaji now suddenly find him unsuitable for the award. Those making provocative remarks and stoking fire should see the kind of messages making rounds on the social media. Perhaps, for the first time, leaders are openly blaming Sharad Pawar for tolerating and encouraging rabid elements capable of disturbing peace and harmony in the state. All those who think of Maharashtra hope that his appeal to end the controversy will be taken seriously by all the players who should desist from poisoning the minds of youngsters.

The Maharashtra Bhushan award is incidental. It does not matter who is selected as every award provokes some reaction and criticism. However, if it takes such a horrendous turn, then it is a cause of concern.

Teen Gang-Raped in Front of Parents in Uttar Pradesh's Kannauj, Stronghold of Mulayam Singh's Family

Kannauj, Uttar Pradesh:  A 15-year-old girl was allegedly gang-raped by six people in front of her parents in Uttar Pradesh's Kannauj district, represented in Parliament by Dimple Yadav, the wife of Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav.

The teen is in a critical condition in hospital. She was allegedly assaulted by six people who first beat her parents, tied up her father and even hit her infant sister.

"They came around 11am to our place, they beat up my husband and tied his hands. They wanted money and jewellery. Then they raped my daughter in front of us. We kept begging for them to let her go, but they didn't listen and our daughter was crying. There were 6 people who raped her in front of my eyes," the girl's mother told NDTV.

"They hit me and my old mother-in-law. They also hit my one year old daughter because she was crying. They hit her so hard that she fainted."

After the attack, the men locked up the family and ran away. They are missing.

The girl was taken to the district hospital but had to be shifted to Kanpur because of her serious injuries.

The incident has emerged as Mrs Yadav's father-in-law Mulayam Singh Yadav, the chief of the ruling Samajwadi Party, faces widespread condemnation for his comment that gang-rapes are "not practical".

Mr Yadav sad said in Tuesday, "Often if one person commits rape, four people are named in the complaint. Four people are named for rape, can it be possible? It is not practical. They probably say one was watching...another was there... If there are four brothers, then all four are named."

USD 10 billion Pakistan nuclear power plant to be built by China

Karachi: Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif inaugurated construction work on a China-backed USD 10 billion nuclear power plant here on Thursday.

The Karachi Nuclear Power Plant II (Kanupp II) with the capacity to produce 1,100 MW electricity is being built with the assistance of China, which has become the biggest investor in energy and infrastructure projects in Pakistan.

This project is an example of the healthy friendship between Pakistan and China. We are thankful for the continued support of Pakistan by the Chinese government," Sharif said.

He also congratulated the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission on the timely start of the project after its foundation was laid in November 2013.

Built for an estimated cost of USD 10 billion, the project was in the spotlight due to opposition by civil society activists who alleged that it was being built in violation of environmental laws.

The start of work on Kanupp II will pave the way for the construction of Kanupp III, also with a planned capacity to produce 1,100 MW, to be built with Chinese help.

The groundbreaking of Kanupp III was also performed in 2013 along with Kanupp II.

In Release of Kashmiri Separatists, a Role for Mehbooba Mufti, Say Some

Srinagar:  The confusion that impelled the house arrest and then the release, two hours later, of Kashmiri separatists in Srinagar is matched by an equally befuddling explanation of just who called the shots.

Sources in the central government say orders were sent from Delhi. In Kashmir, sources say it was Chief Minister Mufti Mohammed Sayeed's daughter, Mehbooba Mufti, who asked for the house arrest to be revoked. After that, they say, the Chief Minister phoned top police officials to end the detention. But Delhi sources insist the police took its orders from the Centre.

The three Hurriyat leaders at the centre of the story - hardliner Syed Ali Shah Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Yasin Malik - are invited to dine on Sunday at the Pakistani High Commission with Sartaj Aziz, Pakistan's National Security Advisor (NSA). Mr Aziz is to meet with his Indian counterpart, Ajit Doval, as both countries resume dialogue as agreed upon by their prime ministers in July.

However, as the talks approach, both sides appear unwilling to proceed. Pakistan's invite to the separatists was designed to provoke India into cancelling the dialogue. India says it won't fall into that trap, but sources also say that no conferral between Mr Aziz and the separatists is acceptable.

A face-saving exit route was alluded to by the ruling BJP (which governs Kashmir in a coalition with Mr Sayeed's regional party, the PDP). The party said that the Pakistani NSA should not meet the separatists before his talks with Mr Doval. "We don't care about who they meet after," said sources to NDTV.

The schedule of the NSA talks has yet to be announced. If they are held on Sunday, and the Pakistani official meets the separatists that night for dinner, all stake-holders may be able to claim that they ceded no ground.

Sources in the government in Delhi say this morning's drama should not be read as a misstep, claiming that it offers "a strong signal" from Delhi about zero-tolerance for "third party participation" in talks between India and Pakistan.

Mastermind Hafiz Saeed Wins Court Case Against Bollywood Movie 'Phantom'

Lahore:  A Pakistani court today banned the release of Bollywood movie "Phantom" in the country on a plea filed by JuD chief and Mumbai attack mastermind Hafiz Saeed against it alleging that the film, set on post-26/11 attacks, contains "filthy propaganda" against him and his outfit.

Lahore High Court judge Justice Shahid Bilal Hassan issued the order to ban the release of the Saif Ali Khan-starrer film in the theaters in Pakistan after hearing the arguments of Saeed's counsel and the government law officer.

Before issuing a short-order on the film, which was scheduled to release on August 28, the judge observed that Indian and other movies are easily available after their release and asked the government what it could do to stop it from being available in the market if a movie is banned.

"If a movie is banned in cinemas what the government could do to stop it from being available in the market in CDs", the judge asked.

In the petition filed in the High Court on August 8, Saeed's advocate A K Dogar alleged that "there is a direct threat to the life of the petitioner (Saeed) and his associates emanating from the content of the trailer of the film."

"It is obvious that dialogues coming out of the lips of the different Indian actors and actresses will poison the minds of Pakistani public and will portray Hafiz Saeed as terrorist even though JuD has not been declared as a proscribed organisation," Dogar said.

Arguing in the court, the government law officer said that since no one had sought No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the government for the release of the movie in Pakistan the petition was "useless" and should be dismissed.

"The petitioner is unnecessarily trying to involve the government," he said.

Based on crime author Hussain Zaidi's novel "Mumbai Avengers", 'Phantom' is set in the aftermath of the 26/11 Mumbai attacks and deals with global terrorism.

The Pakistan censor board had yet not cleared the film for screening in the country.

Since the government allowed exhibition of Indian films in Pakistan, the Censor Board has been careful about not allowing screening of Indian films which deal with the subject of Pakistan, terrorism and ISI.

In the past, Saif Ali Khan's 'Agent Vinod' and Salman Khan's 'Ek Tha Tiger' were also banned from being screened in cinema halls in the country although they are freely available on CDs and DVDs in Pakistan.
